A 2-D ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses a probe placed over a pregnant woman's uterus to obtain an image of the fetus. This probe bounces sound waves off the fetus to create an image, which specialists then use to detect fetal congenital anomalies. Ultrasounds also allow fetal care providers to evaluate the uterine environment, determine fluid levels and more. This test can be performed simultaneously with MRI to obtain different perspectives of the fetus, but is generally used for initial assessment and for continuing assessment throughout the pregnancy.
A fetal echocardiogram is an ultrasound used to show the structure of an unborn baby's heart. These images provide valuable information on the growth and development of the baby's heart and blood vessels. Using this test, fetal cardiology specialists may be able to diagnose a baby's structural heart problems and heart rhythm problems before birth.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive test that utilizes magnet technology to create a fetal image. This test can be used in conjunction with an ultrasound to obtain different perspectives of the fetus and its environment. MRI results can also provide a detailed image of fetal brain anatomy.
Amniocentesis is a test designed to assess chromosomes and karyotypes of a fetus. This procedure involves needle aspiration of amniotic fluid from the uterus using ultrasound guidance. Testing the aspirated fluid can help fetal specialists determine if there is a genetic disorder or other anomaly affecting the unborn baby.
Fetal fluid drainage is a test used to assess the character of fluid in a fetal body cavity, such as the bladder or chest. This procedure involves needle aspiration of fluid from a fetal body cavity under ultrasound guidance. Testing fetal fluid can tell the fetal care team what condition or difficulty a fetus may be experiencing.
